All of the following plants are suited for G-Scale railroaders, faery gardens, rock gardens, troughs, miniature landscapes, Jar-Gems (for strawberry jars),and between stepping stones.

To use this section, ignore the "Herbs A-Z" buttons above this line. Use instead the "1-2-3-4...." buttons at the bottom of this page.

Welcome to Mark's dream section. The smaller the plant is, the more we like it. I find these miniatures, so often over looked and even walked on, absolutely fascinating. Why? Possibly as I mature in my plant tastes, the subtle details of these noble, slow growers are just as exciting as their substantial, bold, splashy counterparts. Possibly it is, that no matter how many varieties I find, there are, literally, always room for more. How about, they are just darn cute, like the tiny doll furniture, that make you yearn to be just their size. Perhaps it's the contrast with this weird world and my own sacred space, where everything is child-like perfection for my boys and me. No war, no hunger, and no weeds! Creating authentic miniature worlds, transport the artists and lucky participants.
    • Whether spelled fairy, fairie or faery, surely they are tickled with the following plants, suited for small containers, troughs, outdoor railroaders and miniature landscapes. Many tolerate the harsh conditions between stepping stones & rock garden crevices. We won't belabor you with repetitive uses. We have attempted to assemble a selection of trees, shrubs, and groundcovers for all parts of the continental 48 states. Hardy conifer trees are now available for all
      • We hope you enjoy these selections as much as we have reveled in collecting them.

Our neighbor, Mr. Johnson, a plant and train collector, gave us this beauty of carmine red, 3/4ö flowers on a carpet of emerald green, heart shaped leaves. Nearly every walk-in customer asked what it was. For months we weren't sure. After selling out, we tracked down the botanical name. Grows anywhere, including full shade, albeit with fewer flowers. Fills a 12ö hanging basket by summer's end!

We found this midget apricot version of "Mini Yellow" and now it's your's (well if you order it and send the bucks.) Apricot, star shaped flowers never seem to stop on this mounding succulent. Durable enough for alpine trough gardens because "Jar Gems" not only forgive you, they love neglect!

Chalk up another Mulberry Creek introduction. This one has the purple flowers of "Palmiest Bridge" with the compact, slightly fuzzy, succulent leaves of "Mini Yellow". Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Flowers: Early Fall to Early Summer to Late Summer to Middle Summer
Common Uses:Jar-Gems"""" TM, Borders, Garden Railroads, Groundcover, Miniature/Faery Garden, Ornamental

We selected this seedling because of its slighty larger and distinctly brighter yellow flowers than "Ice Plant, Mini Yellow." Same tight little mound with flowers that stop blooming only when it is overwatered. Sounds like a "Jar Gem" to me.

Chianti red flowers covering 2-3" mounds distinguish this fine "Ice Plant" adaptable to a miniature garden, in ground, in container or in a hanging basket with other sun lovers. Here's an idea for a mini landscape: choose a tree ("Spicy Globe Basil"), a shrub (this plant & and "Erodium"), a lawn interest ("Knawel Cushion") and grass ("Blue Eyed Grass, Dwarf Purple or Yellow").

Ruby represents its foliage (year round red tinge on its roughly 1" pickle-shaped leaves) and a Summer's worth of ruby red flowers. It's easy to grow whether in a strawberry jar, amid a collection of other "Ice Plants" or in combination with tiny shrubs, trees and groundcovers.

Common Uses:Alpine Rockery, Container, Garden Railroads, Groundcover, Miniature/Faery Garden, Ornamental

An outstanding addition to our non-stop blooming "Mini Ice Plant" collection is this baby pink delosperma from Michigan's Arrowhead Alpines. It is described as "From the Niewveld Mountains outside Beaufort West" (wherever that is). Root some pieces in the fall for indoor winter blooms and an insurance policy that you have it for next year.

A drought "Survivor" like the popular 'John Proffit' but with sunshine yellow "stars." Narrow, blue-green leaves grow faster & long. This tender perennial is winter hardy to Zone 7 and a cheerful addition to baskets or rock garden.

Tender Perennial
These are not your box store / garden center type bedding impatien but an exotic look, reminiscent of New Guinea Impatiens. About half of the leaf and flower size of their oversed brothers, but with all the flower power, they are a welcome change for mini landscapes, small faerie gardnes, railroaders and flower boxes. This entire series is a gift from Cy Hide at Well-Sweep HerbFarm. Thanks, Cy!

I've yet to see a smaller, more heavily variegated ivy than ôHenrietta.ö Great as a houseplant & an easy miniature topiary standard. Perfect for faery gardens as Ivy stands for friendship. So add one to your garden and make friends with ôGod's littlest angels.ö

Ivy, Mini Anita

Hedera helix 'Anita'

This green ivy is so tiny and so non-aggressive, that there is no threat of it growing up and taking over your home exterior. It prefers to creep up tiny trellises, fences and espalier forms.

Jade, Bad-Hair-Day

Crassula muscosa (C. lycopodoides)
Cold Tolerance: Zone 8b 9a 9b-11

Height: 6in. x 12in.
Water: Dry-Normal
Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Common Uses:Jar-Gems"""" TM, Garden Railroads, Bonsai, Container, Houseplants, Miniature/Faery Garden, Ornamental

Mark's common name may reveal his quirky sense of humor, but if you saw the haphazard growth pattern you'd chuckle and agree. It may be a slow growing jade only a weird plant collector could love, but if you're looking for a Southwest scene in container, ground or outdoor railroad set-up, here's your miniature saguaro cactus stand-in.

Jade, Bonsai Tree

Crassula sarcocaulis
Cold Tolerance: Zone 9a 9b-11
Light: Sun-P.Sun to P-Shade
Height: 12x12in.
Water: Dry-Normal
Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Common Uses:Jar-Gems"""" TM, Garden Railroads, Bonsai, Container, Houseplants, Miniature/Faery Garden, Ornamental

Clearly its common name demonstrates how easy it is to have bonsai look with not much intervention. It grows into a tree on its own. While it'll eventually reach 3 feet or more, you have many years to play around with it before you have to haul out a wine barrel sized container.
