SAGE - SALVIAS

All Sages/Salvia were "Herb of the Year," promoting it as the youth herb as it's been used to darken hair, improve memory, even ease wrinkles. Wishful thinking? Not entirely. We use it in the bath to soothe muscles, drink the tea to ease nerves and indigestion and you'd be WISE to add the silver and white varieties to your white garden. Sage is the common name for salvias, a plant group boasting 600+ varieties. Very generally speaking, sages love the sun, heat, and dry draining slopes, but check out each introduction for differences in hardiness & cultural needs. My favorite quality, however, is the variety of color and leaf shapes which is always welcome in otherwise subtle herb greenery.

Compared to "Lemon Meringue," we conclude "Mabel" has a stronger, less sweet flavor from larger leaves and overall plant size. This all green tropical shrub looks like a mini magnolia tree, but blooms most of the year! Grows best when temperatures are above 60 degrees (although a light frost is O.K.) Very appropriate for bonsai. Because of my divided attention between my sons and our business and the careful neglect I give my test subjects, I have gained yet another ""hat"", this one as unofficial tester of houseplants. I declare this plant the 2004/2005 winter winner of the ragaves of our warm, dry, poorly lit (compared to outdoors) home and oops! occasional watering! $ 5.29

A striking, variegated leaved miniature pink magnolia tree! Doesn't bloom as freely as ""Cherry Blossom"" but I have to admit, it does not need flowers to charm visitors. Like ""Cherry Blossom"", it prefers temperatures above 60 degrees (although a light freeze is okay) and does not like to dry out. Still, it is a great bonsai and miniature landscape tree. $ 5.29

Common Uses:Bonsai, Garden Railroads, Hedges/Shrubs, Houseplants, Miniature/Faery Garden, Ornamental, Topiary

As Serissa go, this is the tiniest leaved variety, although it grows rather quickly. 'Tiny Kyoto' is precisely proportioned as a tree for the smallest scale railroad, or as a shrub in large scale. Yes, it's suited for Zone 9-10 growers but it does just fine indoors, over winter. Occasionally, we're treated to its rare white-pink flowers. $ 5.29

Yes it is Alive! From Australia, this is a desert survivor. Looks dead because in full sun, the leaves turn nearly black and are the size of the zig zagging black branches. This is how it has adapted to the blazing summer heat. In a more shady location or in winter the leaves become greener and wider. Although it can grow to 4' X4' it is easy to bonsia or keep pruned in the garden to a small tree in railroad gardens. Oh, almost forgot, tiny yellow flowers appear in winter. $ 5.29

White, pink and green marbled leaves are 1/2 inch across when given lots of soil and fertilizer, but quickly ""self-bonsai"" down to 1/4"" leaves when root bound, giving the appearance of a tricolored ""Redbud"" or ""Katsura Tree"". We've worked on this Mulberry Creek introduction for 4 years to develop a stable, variegated pattern. Finally, yellow and striped leaves update this old fashion, pink flowering cottage garden essential. Comparatively, it is less aggressive in spreading, re-seeding and flowering, but wow does it brighten up the garden! I don't mind its mild demeanor. Demi Bown, author of New Encyclopedia of Herbs & Their Uses, upon visiting us, said we had choosen very well, but that this is still only the 'Variegata' form. $ 3.79

This is the reason many of you originally requested a catalog, remember? Grow your own "sugar" with minimal calories. 10-16 times sweeter than sugar. Easily substituted in teas, coffee, fruit, and cereal. The only limitations are flavor (this is not white sugar or "Nutrasweet"- Mark's Dad hates the flavor,) and it's not for tomato sauce to counteract its acidity or when you need the bulk or yeast action of sugar. Check out the recipe book for hundred of ways to use Stevia. Does best in a cool season area. We get around that by mulching with about 2" of pine bark & watering if needed. Harvest around Labor Day. Hang dry. When crisp, ""coffee grinder"" it.

Based on our 1997 Stevia survey and 8 seasons of experience, full care sheet below. $ 4.29

SWEET FLAG, DWARFS

Light: Shade-Full Sun in water
Water: Wet-Normal
Soil: Organic-Loamy
Common Uses:Potpourri
So why do we keep offering these grasses? Well for one, they are hardy almost anywhere in the U.S. Secondly, they grow equally as well in a sunny wet pond as they do in the shade. Great houseplants yet hardy to Zone 5.

While Sweet Flags enjoy a variety of conditions, the more sun they have the more water they need. As for soil, they prefer extra peat moss, cow manure or compost, that you can give.

The "Japanese" types are best for mini landscapes in containers or along walkways and the A. calamas (or "American") prefer a wet, border area. Use the dried roots as a potpourri fixative, much like "Orris Root".

SWEET VIOLET

One March day in 2002, Elaine Kudela walked into the back greenhouse with this tiny bouquet of heaven scented flowers. About 12 tiny violet flowers was all it took to perfume the front half of this greenhouse. After a long winter, that fragrance was just pure delight. Later we received three varieties as gifts from Elaine. Elaine owned the local herb nursery for years and was secretary of the Sweet Violet Society. Elaine was retiring from the business, just as we were starting up. We count her among the original herbalist of this region that have not only kept herbal knowledge alive throughout the years, but helped popularize these earthy plants to attract "younger couples," crazy enough to try to make a living at peddling these sometimes non-blooming plants. We honor her trail blazing efforts and know that she's in a better place now.

These plants will not re-seed themselves to annoyance. Easy to grow and enjoy! Divide in fall. $ 4.29

Just as the skies are blue, sometimes they turn white too. $ 4.29
