HERBS:

Basil, Mammoth

Ocimum basilicum
Cold Tolerance: Zone 10a 11
Light: Full Sun to Full Sun
Height: 2 x 2 to 2-1/2 Feet
Water: Normal
Soil: Organic-Loamy
Flowers: Middle Summer
Common Uses:Bees, Borders, Culinary, Edible Flowers

Make room for this larger, pesto-type basil with higher yields. 4"" long leaves can be used to wrap fillings, like grape leaves, imparting a scent and taste sweeter than Genovese and less clove-like. Height can reach 24-30 $ 3.29

Basil, Sweet Genovese

Basil, Sweet Genovese
Ocimum basilicum 'Sweet Genovese'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 9a 9b-11
Light: Full Sun to Sun-P.Sun
Height: 2-2 1/2 Feet
Water: Normal
Soil: Organic-Loamy
Common Uses:Bees, Borders, Culinary, Edible Flowers

Expect 1 pound of leaves per plant on this, the most "basilly" of sweet basils, in our opinion. We refer to as it as "The Pesto Basil." As usual, you need to keep white flowers pinched off, but use them. The flowers are even sweeter than the great tasting leaves. $ 3.29

Bay Leaf 5”

Laurus nobilis
Cold Tolerance: Zone 7a 7b 8a 9a 9b-11
Light: Full Sun to Sun-P.Sun
Height: 5-20 Feet
Water: Normal
Soil: Organic-Loamy
Flowers: Early Spring
Common Uses:Borders, Culinary, Edible Flowers, Hedges/Shrubs, Topiary

'Fess up - How many of you are guilty of dried out, ancient bay leaves? Leaves loose 50% of their flavor in just 6 months. Reward yourself with sweet, fresh leaves. The difference is amazing! Fresh bay adds full flavor to stews, sauerkraut, beef, pork and coupled with red wine, are the secret to terrific spaghetti sauce. Grow directly in the ground for maximum growth. Dig up and repot in the fall for an ideal houseplant. $15.00

ELFIN HERB

Cuphea hyssopifolia
Cold Tolerance: Zone 9a 9b
Flowers: Early Fall to Early Summer to Late Summer to Middle Summer
Common Uses:Bonsai, Miniature/Faery Garden, Ornamental, Topiary
Years ago Ben asked Mark, "What da name of dat pretty flower?" He told Ben who responded as any 3 year old would, "Why?" "Because," Mark said,"fairies like to use the flowers as pretty little hats and then elves, who like to play tricks, fly by and snatch the flowers right off the fairies' head and get them to chase the Elfin."

These are very easy plants to grow, thriving in full shade to partial sun. As well suited to mixed containers as bedding plants. After one growing season, you can create an amazing bonsai tree by simply removing the lower leaves. Faerie nice!

Mint, Apple

Mentha suaveolens
Cold Tolerance: Zone 4a 4b 5a 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b
Light: P.Shade-Shade to Shade
Height: 2 Feet
Water: Wet-Normal
Soil: Organic-Loamy
Common Uses:Bees, Culinary, Edible Flowers, Fragrant, Medicinal, Potpourri, Tea

Fluffy, upright posture with almost dusty green foliage clumsily describes this mildly apple scented mint. I most often use the soft, prickly leaves in my herb infused water, lemonade or tea (hot or cold). $ 3.79

Mint, Orange

Mentha aquatica `Citrata'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 4a 4b 5a 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b
Light: P.Shade-Shade to Shade
Height: 2 Feet
Water: Wet-Normal
Soil: Organic-Loamy
Common Uses:Bath, Bees, Borders, Culinary, Edible Flowers, Fragrant, Ornamental, Potpourri, Repellant, Shade, Tea

Bronzy green, round leaves make the best flavored drinking water. (just harvest, wash, squeeze, pop into a pitcher of water, refrigerate for 4-6 hours and enjoy). Refreshing citrus flavor for fruit salads, beef, and cookies. Marinate leaves or blue flowers in vinegar to eat or bathe in! Good flea and ant repellent. $ 3.79

Rosemary, Arp

Rosemary, Arp
Rosmarinus officinalis `Arp'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b-11
Light: Full Sun to Full Sun
Height: 3-4 Feet
Water: Dry-Normal
Soil: Loamy-Sandy Well Drained
Flowers: Early SpringLate Winter
Common Uses:Culinary, , Medicinal

Perhaps the hardiest of all varieties, however, our winter breezes are still too stiff. In the past, we wrote about it's rangey form, but frankly, this year it was thick & well branched. Go figure. If you're in zone 6 or warmer, it's worth a try outdoors in winter. Leaves & blooms enhance jams & orange sauce for poultry or lamb. $ 3.79

Sage, Berggarten Variegated

Sage, Berggarten Variegated
Salvia officinalis 'Variegated Berggarten'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 5a 9b
Light: Full Sun
Height: 2 x 3 feet
Water: Normal
Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Flowers: Late Spring
Common Uses:Bath, Bees, Borders, Butterfly, Culinary, Edible Flowers, Fragrant, Medicinal, Ornamental, Tea

Mark gained this cool variegated plant from Scott Kresge (Emily May Garden Shop in Pen Argyl, PA) at the Herb Society of America's Cleveland Conference. Just as winter hardy as 'Berggarten' with clean, blue-green and white variegation on a leaf that is closer to the slender outline of straight S. officinalis. Prune out anything that reverts. $ 3.79

Sct. Geranium, Old Fashion Rose

Pelargonium Graveolens Group'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b-11
Light: Sun-P.Sun to P. Shade
Height: 2x3 Feet
Water: Normal- Dry
Soil: Organic-Loamy
Flowers: Middle Summer
Common Uses:Culinary, Edible Flowers, Fragrant, Topiary
Rose Scented
For baking and jellies, I usually reach for this leaf first. Infuse chopped leaves in warm liquids, filter and use to flavor sauces, jellies, jams, sugars or in a facial wash, as Victorian women did, for pale com-plexion. Add pink flowers to salads or leaves to potpourri. $ 4.79
