This miniature rosette ""Aeonium"" of bright green foliage can be a favorite on next year's St. Patrick's Day. Because of its thumb-sized rosettes on 4"" woody stem, it makes a no hassle ""Jar Gem"" as well as a tree in miniature desert landscapes.

Add a bold texture and color to your strawberry jar with 3 inch rosettes of glorious green and white striped foliage. In the north, at seasons end, simply cut off some end rosettes (or dig up entire plant) & stick in a sandy mix for carefree houseplants.

When about 2 dozen, green centered, purple edged, fleshy lobes compete to form a 12 inch rosette, this assertive succulent demands its place as a dramatic focal point in a tropical or African themed mixed container. Be sure to seek out a sophisticated vase to match, so you can enjoy it indoors in the winter as well. A gift from Mary, a customer of ours who “acquired” it from the Queen Mother’s personal garden. We love it since it blooms from Christmas through April, indoors. Flowers last for weeks, especially when held in a cool- cold window. Great plant for small containers on a hot sunny deck which should be brought indoors when your overcoat comes out in the fall.

Got a friend with a black thumb? Encourage them to try Echeverias. This one is particularly interesting. In Ohio, we bring them indoors, find a sunny spot, neglect the watering and we're rewarded with wavy blue rosettes now and orange-red, bell flowers hung from sheperd hook flower stalks each Summer, after we kick them out. Plant in terra cotta pots or strawberries jars to bring out their flower color even more.

We started to grow this beautifully colored ""Pencil Cactus"" for our Tropical ""Jar Gem"" collection, but after seeing it used in a California railroad garden in ""GARDEN RAILROAD"" magazine, we doubled the number of plants this year. Yes, they are truly red, orange, and yellow with a touch of pink in the cooler months. VERY HOT!!

Our neighbor, Mr. Johnson, a plant and train collector, gave us this beauty of carmine red, 3/4ö flowers on a carpet of emerald green, heart shaped leaves. Nearly every walk-in customer asked what it was. For months we weren't sure. After selling out, we tracked down the botanical name. Grows anywhere, including full shade, albeit with fewer flowers. Fills a 12ö hanging basket by summer's end!

Check another ôHoly Grailö off Mark's list. While researching ôHeart-Leaf Carpet Appleö there was a reference to a strongly variegated form with red flowers and he found it. True to its flashy description, it sold out as fast as we could propagate it for our retail public. Order early!

Clearly its common name demonstrates how easy it is to have bonsai look with not much intervention. It grows into a tree on its own. While it'll eventually reach 3 feet or more, you have many years to play around with it before you have to haul out a wine barrel sized container.

Just as odd looking as Lord of the Ring's ""Smeagol"", imagine a normal Jade Plant but with the leaves rolled up giving the overall appearance of fluted rolls of wrapping paper stashed vertically in a small wastebasket. Geez! I wish we could afford that nice digital camera about now! Use it as a ""tree"" for a dish garden or an interesting strawberry jar topper.

Take a clue from its species: argentea which refers to silver or white. Artistic strokes of creamy white shimmer to almost silvery highlights in the summer sun while the airbrushed pink margins deepen in hue. With such natural beauty and tolerance of our dry winter home, I don't mind scooping it into a container for our pleasure in December after we've enjoyed it outdoors in the warm months.

Panda is an appropriate common name for this plant if you compare appearances. Both are fuzzy, gray, and adorable but the plant is unquestionably easier to care for indoors, where most gardeners need to move it, in the frigid months. More specifically, 3"" long leaves, with black dotted edging, radiate from a central stem that can branch with careful pruning. Partner this panda in the sun with a ""Wooster's Dwarf Bamboo"" nearby in light shade and see if anyone is clever enough to catch the connection.

Last year we featured South Africa at our annual herb fair. We sought out plants from that country and this is one from West Cape, S.A. Blue-gray ""Tiger Jaw"" leaves decorate long, pink trailing stems. Large, pale pink-red flowers upscale the traditional Strawberry Jar.
