Opuntia humifusa 'Mulberry Creek


This plant was a gift for a gentleman in Castalia, OH whom we could never find again. After having gifted it to a few friends, it has now entered the hardy cactus circles as ""Mulberry Creek"". It flowers every year during the third week of June- just before our HerbFair. It needs grreat drainage to prevent winter rotting, but is hardy to Zone 4!

Don't confuse this one with the purple flowered ornamental oregano. This one is for cooking. It's still a vigorous grower, which will form 3-4' clumps, so give it room to grow. Harvest frequently. Sprinkle flowers or leaves over pizza, spaghetti, heavy meats or stews, venison, and other ""manly"" fare.

Plant this gilded groundcover with purple crocus or red tulips underneath. (This saves your bulbs from being dug up by critters or yourself.) Tolerates a tremendous amount of shade and turns chartreuse by summer. In full sun, color is more golden but needs extra water. Summer flowers are white and add elegance to fresh flower arrangements or pizzaz to pizza fresh out of the oven. Mild culinary flavor for fresh salads.

Very similar to ""Kent Beauty"" except this one has longer ""hop-like cones"" that are pure ivory with pink flowers poking out from underneath. The name sounds like the final exam for Limbo studies, but I assure you, it's gorgeous!

Mark was taken aback when he saw these half starved alpines at a Michigan nursery. Give it moisture and morning sun and the foliage's patchwork of pink, green and fuchsia will be enhanced along with deep pink stems. Anybody would be "lucky" to have this clover in a hanging basket or semi shaded faery garden where celtic shapes are revered. Remove all-bronze colored stems as they over take 'Plum Crazy'

Oh, I like this one and not just its name. We need more yellow foliaged plants as a contrast to our sea of green. Added attributes are its fast growth, ""Shamrock-shaped"" leaves, red stems and 3 inch high yellow flowers.

The connection between Ireland and faery lore is.... legendary, so these ridiculously tiny clover leaves are most appropriate in a garden of the wee folk. It grows to 1/2"" small and carries double white flowers, no bigger than a baby pea each spring and then again in fall. Emerald green leaves in the shade, will bronze with increased sunlight. Doesn't like extreme heat or drought. A natural bonsai groundcover
