SAGE - SALVIAS

All Sages/Salvia were "Herb of the Year," promoting it as the youth herb as it's been used to darken hair, improve memory, even ease wrinkles. Wishful thinking? Not entirely. We use it in the bath to soothe muscles, drink the tea to ease nerves and indigestion and you'd be WISE to add the silver and white varieties to your white garden. Sage is the common name for salvias, a plant group boasting 600+ varieties. Very generally speaking, sages love the sun, heat, and dry draining slopes, but check out each introduction for differences in hardiness & cultural needs. My favorite quality, however, is the variety of color and leaf shapes which is always welcome in otherwise subtle herb greenery.

We have to admit, during the first Summer we put them in our yard, we weren't all that impressed until Autumn as their name would suggest. Then the cool weather came- and WOW did they ever bloom and put on a great show, Even the butterflies applauded! With all that Spring and Summer shows of color, we need a season extender like this.

Broad, oval shaped leaves on this compact plant make 'Berggarten' easier to use. It's so much nicer, there are few reasons to buy the common sage anymore. ""Flash fry"" leaves in a bit of olive oil, only about 30 sec. Remove. Cool. Crumble & use like bacon bits. Rated great variety for southern states. In the north, unfortunatly, it rarely blooms as flowering tips freeze off.

Mark gained this cool variegated plant from Scott Kresge (Emily May Garden Shop in Pen Argyl, PA) at the Herb Society of America's Cleveland Conference. Just as winter hardy as 'Berggarten' with clean, blue-green and white variegation on a leaf that is closer to the slender outline of straight S. officinalis. Prune out anything that reverts.

Because it's an exact miniature version of common sage without the ""unkept"" look, it's a natural for mixed containers and child-sized hedges. Plus it's covered with blue flower spikes in the spring. Use 1 tsp (fresh) per pound of pork to make sausage, or add to the classic turkey dressing.

Used ceremonially by southwestern Native Peoples to purify themselves (in sweat lodges during flu season) or dwellings, this power-filled, silver leaved shrub, about the size of garden sage will have everyone asking ""What is it?"" Traditionally, small wands are burnt to ward off evil spirits. Frankly, it's odors scares anything away. Ask Mark's brother, Kyle, (our website guru) just how bad it smells. A florist friend told us this was ""the most magnificent cut herb"" he has ever grown. Plants rise to about 5 ft. tall by August, when, fuzzy, blue spikes appear. Its flavor is more fruity than heavy sage. Plants grow large and enjoy being harvested, but pick lower leaves, which are more succulent, being protected from the sun. Look this up on the internet (which I suggest you do often- just be sure our botanical name and the one online match), and flowers of white, heavily speckled in maroon, pop out at you. The parent plant might slowly fade after flowering leaving the burden of propagation to the self sowing seeds. Take note of the large rosettes of pale green foliage dusted with silver. Perhaps you'll remember these plants like a “chalky” limestone soil which shouts rock garden and troughs.

Lemon ScentedI admit that some catalog authors can stretch beyond imagination in describing their beloveds, however this is not the case when I say, this is the most euphoric lemon scent of all our herbs. It truly smells like lemon meringue pie. This smaller leaf variety, with pink blossoms, can be baked on the bottom of cakes (first grease pans and dust with flour, lay out leaves, bake, then invert pan after it's cooled), candied to decorate desserts, or added to teas. Different scent than ""Mabel Grey"". Buy both of them.

Yes it is Alive! From Australia, this is a desert survivor. Looks dead because in full sun, the leaves turn nearly black and are the size of the zig zagging black branches. This is how it has adapted to the blazing summer heat. In a more shady location or in winter the leaves become greener and wider. Although it can grow to 4' X4' it is easy to bonsia or keep pruned in the garden to a small tree in railroad gardens. Oh, almost forgot, tiny yellow flowers appear in winter.

Easily substituted in teas, coffee, fruit, and cereal. The only limitations are flavor (this is not white sugar or “Nutrasweet”- Mark’s Dad hates the flavor,) and it’s not for tomato sauce to counteract its acidity or when you need the bulk or yeast action of sugar. We were intrigued by this ever bearing strawberry for its fruits “arch over the foliage.” Yes, you get handfuls of berries throughout the summer but they tiny, (very sweet!) and a pain in the butt to pick. So why do we keep offering these grasses? Well for one, they are hardy almost anywhere in the U.S. Secondly, they grow equally as well in a sunny wet pond as they do in the shade. Great houseplants yet hardy to Zone 5.While Sweet Flags enjoy a variety of conditions, the more sun they have the more water they need. As for soil, they prefer extra peat moss, cow manure or compost, that you can give.The "Japanese" types are best for mini landscapes in containers or along walkways and the A. calamas (or "American") prefer a wet, border area. Use the dried roots as a potpourri fixative, much like "Orris Root".

This dwarf grass grows to only 4"" tall. Lime yellow leaves contrast beautifully against black stones. In full sun, it needs a wet/bog soil, however, it is one of few grasses which grow well in full shade with just normal soil moisture. Great for small containers and as pond plant.

Terrariums may not be as hot as when I was in the 6th grade, but they still hold appeal for plenty of young (and veteran) gardeners. Sweet flag is among the dozen or so groups of plants that we offer that are happy under those often boggy, somewhat shady conditions in those enclosed ""conservatories."" One March day in 2002, Elaine Kudela walked into the back greenhouse with this tiny bouquet of heaven scented flowers. About 12 tiny violet flowers was all it took to perfume the front half of this greenhouse. After a long winter, that fragrance was just pure delight. Later we received three varieties as gifts from Elaine. Elaine owned the local herb nursery for years and was secretary of the Sweet Violet Society. Elaine was retiring from the business, just as we were starting up. We count her among the original herbalist of this region that have not only kept herbal knowledge alive throughout the years, but helped popularize these earthy plants to attract "younger couples," crazy enough to try to make a living at peddling these sometimes non-blooming plants. We honor her trail blazing efforts and know that she's in a better place now.

Queen Charlotte is far more heat tolerant than our previously offered ""Linane"", which it now replaces. You can nibble on and crystallize the dark purple, incredibly fragrant flowers blooming all year although they only open up in cool weather. Five inch tall rosettes of heart shaped foliage hold flowers, for picking, in very early spring and then again in early fall until a hard freeze.! These plants will not re-seed themselves to annoyance. Easy to grow and enjoy! Divide in fall.

Freeze the sweet white May flowers that hover over dark green foliage, in ice cubes, to make ""May Wine"" during June's strawberry harvest. 3 tbsp blossoms in 1 gallon white wine impart a vanilla flavor. Add 1-2 cups fresh berries. This groundcover beat out the native violet (not to be confused with ""Sweet Violets"") and was weed-free by the 3rd spring. Essential faery garden plant. Be cautious if on ""blood thinning"" medicine.

Greetings from Shelley Hayes, an early '90s transplant from N. Michigan. My interest in plants and gardening started very early in life. I have been blessed with many great teachers including mentors, like my grandfather, who made cough syrups and salves, and propagated house plants. His creation of a five acre garden with fruits, veggies, medicinal plants and herbs was, and still is, an inspiration.
