Shelley Hayes

SHELLEY HAYES, production manager and queen of small space gardens

Greetings from Shelley Hayes, an early '90s transplant from N. Michigan. My interest in plants and gardening started very early in life. I have been blessed with many great teachers including mentors, like my grandfather, who made cough syrups and salves, and propagated house plants. His creation of a five acre garden with fruits, veggies, medicinal plants and herbs was, and still is, an inspiration. Planting to saving seeds was an annual event that I participated in and looked forward to, sort of like Spring. The delight of identifying new spring plants and flowers is my annual date with Nature. Like all gardeners and lovers of plants, I found my way to Mulberry Creek Herb Farm, a plant lovers paradise with diverse and often rare collections of herbs and alpine miniatures. From my participation in the very first herb fair to the introduction of miniature landscapes, it has been a great journey! My other interests include birding, sewing, archery, basketry, trail riding and camping with our horses. I was an avid hiker and backpacker in my earlier years, when foraging and plant identification became a passion. I love to cook, from the kitchen to a dutch oven over an open fire.

St. Johnswort, Improved

Common Uses:Borders, Medicinal
Oh St. Johnswort! I gotta try it. What's it for anyway? a customer once asked. This particular cultivar may have the highest content of hypericin (the active ingredient) that we've found, but you need to do your own medicinal research. Summer brings small yellow flowers with smaller leaves than the landscape variety. Used medicinally as an antidepressant, antiviral, antispasmodic and wound healer. As with all herbs- use carefully.

You can nibble on and crystallize the dark purple, incredibly fragrant flowers blooming all year although they only open up in cool weather. Five inch tall rosettes of heart shaped foliage hold flowers, for picking, in very early spring and then again in early fall until a hard freeze.! These plants will not re-seed themselves to annoyance. Easy to grow and enjoy! Divide in fall.

A gift from the Wee-folk in our gardens. We didn't plant it. Lovely sky blue, fragrant flowers prevail whenever cool weather reigns. Just as the skies are blue, sometimes they turn white too.

THYME

Common Uses:Tea
Why do we have so many thymes? When you've collected as many herbs as we have, some groups are bound to be your favorites. Each time we visit an herb specialty nursery, I head for thymes, knowing I'll probably find a completely new scent, leaf shape, growth habit or flower color. Most thymes are hardy for us, year after year because we nourish (compost at planting time and, ideally, annually), hold back on water, and we site them in a raised bed. They thrive in our 2 tiered (1 & 2 ft. high) bed with brick walls that provide the height and warmth. Pick any food, there is a thyme for it from savory to sweet. Medicinally, the active ingredient "thymol" is a strong disinfectant and antiviral component, so it's used heavily during the flu season. Ben & Joshua get thyme baths for coughs and it's an ingredient in their vapor rubs, adult "Listerine".

Thyme, English Broadleaf

Thymus 'English Broadleaf'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 4a 4b 5a 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b
Light: Full Sun to Full Sun
Height: 12-16in.
Water: Normal- Dry
Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Common Uses:Culinary, , Medicinal, , Ornamental

White flowers in summer attract many bees to make the best tasting honey. Harvest soft tips any time of year for vinegars, italian dishes, breads, focaccias & goulash. Start with 2 tbsp fresh for a large pot of spaghetti. Harvest 3-4"" long stems in September, dry on screen and use all winter.

Thyme, English Variegated

Thymus 'EnglishVariegated'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 4a 4b 5a 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b
Light: Full Sun to Sun-P.Shade
Height: 8 - 12in.
Water: Normal- Dry
Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Common Uses:Culinary, , Medicinal, , Ornamental
This antique variety once common in the trade, was edged out after “English Wedgewood” was discovered. One of our “Wedgewoods” reverted back to a parent creating a splish-splash variegation, that holds through summer’s heat. We’re proud to be one of the few nurseries to re-introduce this unique and tasty plant. Puts up with shade, but flavor’s always better in full sun.

Thyme, Provencal

Thymus vulgaris 'Provenca'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 5a 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b
Light: Full Sun to Full Sun
Height: 8 - 12in.
Water: Normal- Dry
Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Common Uses:Culinary, Medicinal, Ornamental
""Thanks for the Memories""Don't just look at it! Smell it! Taste it! At our HerbFair both author Susan Belsinger and culinary instructor Lynn Nelson of ""The Provincal Kitchen"", absolutely fell in love with this variety. So will you. The flavor's strong, but balanced for any Italian or French cooking. Very nice blue-gray color too!

Valerian \ Garden Heliotrope

Valerian officinalis
Cold Tolerance: Zone 4a 4b 5a 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b
Light: P.Shade-P.Sun to Shade
Height: 3 - 5 feet
Water: Wet-Normal
Soil: Organic-Loamy
Common Uses:Medicinal, , Ornamental, , Shade, , Tea

Considered by many horticulturists to be one of the finest hardy perennials for the shade. Fragrant 5"" pinkish-white flower clusters in mid-summer perfume the early evening air. What irony then, that the medicinal roots should smell so bad. A cold tea made from dried 2 year old roots is used for colds, insomnia and nervous disorders.

Valerian, Garden Pink

Valerian officinalis 'BLBP19'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 4b 5a 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a
Light: P. Shade – P. Sun
Height: 32h x 18w inches
Water: Normal
Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Common Uses:Medicinal, Butterfly
Pinkish-white umbels tower over fern-like foliage flagging down some resident butterflies and moths. The particularly high essential oil, valeric acid and extract make the roots appealing to humans to normally be used as a nerve tonic and relaxer. It is best to allow the plant at least two years of growth before harvesting some of its roots.
