Broad, oval shaped leaves on this compact plant make 'Berggarten' easier to use. It's so much nicer, there are few reasons to buy the common sage anymore. ""Flash fry"" leaves in a bit of olive oil, only about 30 sec. Remove. Cool. Crumble & use like bacon bits. Rated great variety for southern states. In the north, unfortunatly, it rarely blooms as flowering tips freeze off.

Mark gained this cool variegated plant from Scott Kresge (Emily May Garden Shop in Pen Argyl, PA) at the Herb Society of America's Cleveland Conference. Just as winter hardy as 'Berggarten' with clean, blue-green and white variegation on a leaf that is closer to the slender outline of straight S. officinalis. Prune out anything that reverts.

Because it's an exact miniature version of common sage without the ""unkept"" look, it's a natural for mixed containers and child-sized hedges. Plus it's covered with blue flower spikes in the spring. Use 1 tsp (fresh) per pound of pork to make sausage, or add to the classic turkey dressing.

A florist friend told us this was ""the most magnificent cut herb"" he has ever grown. Plants rise to about 5 ft. tall by August, when, fuzzy, blue spikes appear. Cut stem back about 1/3 in June and July to promote more branching, flowering & compact height. Important pollen source for bees in the fall if frost doesn't get them.

Delicious scarlet-red flowers on 3' spikes form in the fall as the grand finale. Use fresh leaves or flowers in teas, fruit or chicken salads, white wine, and summer lemonade. Its flavor is more fruity than heavy sage. Plants grow large and enjoy being harvested, but pick lower leaves, which are more succulent, being protected from the sun. Stop pinching tips by August 1st to allow flowers to form.

Same bright yellow buttons as other ""Santolina,"" but on silvery-gray, soft foliage. Also used in hedges, knot and rock gardens. Prune in spring after new growth appears. Working at Cedar Point one summer, I had to prune Santolina regularly. I know this sounds weird, but it reminded me of bologna. Moth repellent too.

It may sport the bright yellow buttons you're used to seeing on the regular ""Santolina"" but the foliage is more blue and leathery, i.e., like a rosemary. Like the others, it can be clipped into a short hedge (preventing flowering), in spring after new growth appears, or allowed to grow to 2'. Dry bunches for moth repellent bags. It is a slow comer in spring.

I can't think of a darker, (mahogany, almost black) foliaged representative from the plant world. Imagine the color contrast in your garden of a low, 2"" groundcover spilling over light colored stones, or nestled next to Sedum, ""Golden"" as a ""Jar Gem"". This is sure to be a garden classic.

Very rare Caribbean Pea family tree that makes and easy bonsai or mini tropical tree that looks like a graceful ""Honey Locust"". You know, that lawn tree that's in everyone yard with that light, airy look, usually golden. The Senna leaf is however dark green to a purplish, only 1 inch long with 7-10 pairs of eraser head size leaftets. Very delicate, oh ya did a mention the bright yellow 1 inch summer flowers?

This all green tropical shrub looks like a mini magnolia tree, but blooms most of the year! Grows best when temperatures are above 60 degrees (although a light frost is O.K.) Very appropriate for bonsai. Because of my divided attention between my sons and our business and the careful neglect I give my test subjects, I have gained yet another ""hat"", this one as unofficial tester of houseplants. I declare this plant the 2004/2005 winter winner of the ragaves of our warm, dry, poorly lit (compared to outdoors) home and oops! occasional watering!

We've offered other extremely low growing, variegated miniatures before but this one's Winter hardy here. The white flowers play second fiddle to the year round green and cream. Due to its low, but spreading stature, make sure you site it in a special, close-up garden with other morning sun loving, non-aggressive miniatures.

Yes it is Alive! From Australia, this is a desert survivor. Looks dead because in full sun, the leaves turn nearly black and are the size of the zig zagging black branches. This is how it has adapted to the blazing summer heat. In a more shady location or in winter the leaves become greener and wider. Although it can grow to 4' X4' it is easy to bonsia or keep pruned in the garden to a small tree in railroad gardens. Oh, almost forgot, tiny yellow flowers appear in winter.

Karen has not been able to kill this one in the house! (What?! That's not true - no, wait a minute, you're right.) Phenomenally tolerant to low light, even dry conditions. White, pink and green marbled leaves are 1/2 inch across when given lots of soil and fertilizer, but quickly ""self-bonsai"" down to 1/4"" leaves when root bound, giving the appearance of a tricolored ""Redbud"" or ""Katsura Tree"". Our best miniature landscape tree for the summer shade garden and a delightfully colorful houseplant.

We’ve worked on this Mulberry Creek introduction for 4 years to develop a stable, variegated pattern. Finally, yellow and striped leaves update this old fashion, pink flowering cottage garden essential. Comparatively, it is less aggressive in spreading, re-seeding and flowering, but wow does it brighten up the garden! I don’t mind its mild demeanor. Demi Bown, author of New Encyclopedia of Herbs & Their Uses, upon visiting us, said we had choosen very well, but that this is still only the 'Variegata' form.

This dwarf grass grows to only 4"" tall. Lime yellow leaves contrast beautifully against black stones. In full sun, it needs a wet/bog soil, however, it is one of few grasses which grow well in full shade with just normal soil moisture. Great for small containers and as pond plant.

Terrariums may not be as hot as when I was in the 6th grade, but they still hold appeal for plenty of young (and veteran) gardeners. Queen Charlotte is far more heat tolerant than our previously offered ""Linane"", which it now replaces. You can nibble on and crystallize the dark purple, incredibly fragrant flowers blooming all year although they only open up in cool weather. Five inch tall rosettes of heart shaped foliage hold flowers, for picking, in very early spring and then again in early fall until a hard freeze.! These plants will not re-seed themselves to annoyance. Easy to grow and enjoy! Divide in fall.

The flavor's strong, but balanced for any Italian or French cooking. Very nice blue-gray color too!
